The Clarinet Family
The clarinet has over ten kinds within the family, which is shown below.
It also has a modern family which includes the; E flat, B flat, Alto, and Contra Brass. All of the clarinets within the modern family except the contra bass are used in most orchestras today within the western culture. Unlike the traditional Turkish orchestra that uses a G clarinet which can be more complex. As well as the Viennese folk music that uses a high G and a high A flat clarinet.

The Woodwind Family
The woodwind family gets its name because to make a noise with the instrument you have to blow air through the mouthpiece which puts the wind in woodwind. As well the instruments use to be made from wood, which is why its called a woodwind instrument. Now the instrument can be made of wood, metal, plastic, or some combination of them. Some of the woodwind instruments use reeds to make their sounds. There is two different kinds of reed a single reed which is one piece of wood and there is a double reed that uses two pieces of wood joined together. When playing an instrument that uses a reed when you blow into the instrument it will vibrate and create the sound that travels through the instrument.
In the woodwind family the smaller instruments play higher pitched and the larger instruments play lower pitches. Here is all the instruments in the family in order from the higher pitched instruments to the lower; piccolo, flute, oboe, English horn, clarinet, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon and contrabassoon.
